A Rhode Island man has been found guilty of drunk driving following a single-vehicle accident that left one man dead and two injured.

The man, identified as a Rhode Islander who spent some time in the Merchant Marine and formerly worked as a fisherman, publicly apologized to the court following the sentencing. The man was sentenced with six years imprisonment and six years of probation afterward.

According to the prosecution, the man was driving a truck with other passengers while intoxicated last summer. While on Block Island, the man began to accelerate to 73 miles-per-hour in a 25 mile-per-hour speed limit zone, eventually losing control over the truck, and crashing the vehicle into a tree and a wall made of stone.

Two of the driver’s passengers were injured. One other passenger was killed after being thrown from the truck due to the impact of the collision.
