Home Breathalyzer Tests

If a police officer pulls over your vehicle and suspects that you are intoxicated, he or she will likely administer either a breathalyzer test or a field sobriety test. If your blood alcohol content (BAC) is over the legal limit, you could face arrest, license suspension, and DUI charges that could seriously impact your future.

If you or someone you know has been arrested for driving under the influence, it’s very important that you seek the assistance of a qualified attorney in order to protect your legal rights and interests. Rhode Island DUI defense lawyer James Powderly is dedicated to representing those facing alcohol-related driving charges, so contact us today by calling 401-662-9006 and learn what we can do to help you.

Taking a Breathalyzer Test at Home

In recent years, a number of home breathalyzer devices have appeared on the market. The prices of these personal breathalyzers vary according to quality, but small breathalyzers that attach to a key chain are available online for under $20. Instructions for administering a home breathalyzer test are:

  • Turn on the device and wait for a ’0′ to appear on its digital screen
  • Put the device into testing mode and instruct the subject to blow through the plastic tube
  • As the subject blows, the breathalyzer will begin a countdown. The subject should continue blowing until the countdown is complete.
  • The results should appear on the screen. A person is legally intoxicated if his or her BAC is above a 0.08.

However, like actual breathalyzers used by law enforcement officials, the readings produced by at-home breathalyzers can be inaccurate, and should not be relied upon by users.
