How Much Alcohol is in One Drink?

Not all alcoholic drinks contain the same amount of alcohol. If an officer pulls you over and asks you how many drinks you have had earlier in the night, he or she may assume that you have consumed more alcohol than you actually have. Anything you say to the officer may be used against you in order to charge you with a DUI.

Different drinks contain different amounts of alcohol. Therefore, before you make the decision to hit the road after a night out, you should remember not only the number of drinks you have consumed, but the type of drinks they were. That way, you can make an informed decision about how much alcohol is in your system and whether or not you are legally allowed to drive.

Charts and statistics normally define one “drink” as:

  • One 12 oz. beer
  • One shot of 80 Proof liquor (Tequila, Whiskey, Vodka, Rum)
  • One 4 oz glass of wine

Remember that other alcohols may have more or less alcohol content, and that mixed drinks can vary in the amount and type of alcohol present. By keeping in mind how much alcohol may be in each drink that you consume, you can make the informed decision of whether or not you are too impaired to operate your vehicle.
