A Bridgewater man was arrested after he allegedly rear-ended a state police cruiser in a highway breakdown lane early Saturday morning with a blood alcohol content over twice the legal limit.
According to officials with the Tauton Police Department, 24 year-old Matthew Charette told officers he knew he was too drunk to drive. Police say he did not brake at all before colliding with the police cruiser.
Charette pleaded not guilty to drunk-driving charges at his arraignment Tuesday. He was released on personal recognizance after agreeing not to drink alcohol and submit to random testing. His driver’s license was automatically suspended for 30 days for failing a breathalyzer test.
Charette has no criminal history and a clean driving record, aside from a speeding ticket in 2004.
