Rhode Island is one of the top five states when it comes to drunk driving fatalities.

According to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s National Center for Statistics and Analysis, Rhode Island ranked 5th out of the 50 states when it came to motor vehicle fatalities in which a driver was at the legal limit of .08 percent or higher in 2008. In 2003 and 2004, Rhode Island was ranked first in the nation in the percentage of fatalities related to alcohol.

Thirty-eight percent of the state’s 69 driving fatalities in 2008 involved someone who was drunk. Only Hawaii, Montana, Wyoming, and North Dakota have worse records.

In 2007, Rhode Island driving fatalities involving alcohol were at 32 percent, the national average. In 2005, the state ranked 11th; in 2006 Rhode Island ranked 10th.
