Woman who caused pedestrian accident pleads guilty to DUI

Yesterday morning, a 49-year-old woman plead guilty to driving under the influence causing serious injuries. The woman was charged with a DUI, after causing a pedestrian accident in March 2011. The driver struck a 14-year-old girl who was on a walk with her cousin in East Providence.

The teenager was unconscious after being hit by the woman’s vehicle, and was taken to the hospital in critical condition and put in a medically induced coma while she recovered. The 49-year-old’s blood alcohol level was over two times the legal limit, after the accident. She initially did not plead guilty, but changed her plea this week in Providence Superior Court.

Barrington police recently charged a 29-year-old woman who was driving on County Road in Barrington, but thought she was in Wakefield, Rhode Island with drunk driving. According to police, the West Bridgewater, Massachusetts woman was pulled over shortly after 4 a.m. on Sunday morning. The driver was traveling southbound near the city’s Town Hall.

The woman was recorded to be traveling at 50 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone and swerving. When the police officer talked to her, the driver said that she had just left a party in Wakefield. Reports indicate that the 29-year-old failed a field sobriety test and appeared to be intoxicated.  She did not submit a breathalyzer test to police.

Police will not charge Rep. Watson with DUI

Posted on February 15th, 2012 No Comments

Last week, the South Kingston Police Department announced that it will not be filing a DUI charge against former East Greenwich Representative Robert Watson. “The evidence presented significant legal issues that would have made a successful prosecution unlikely,” said Captain Jeffrey Allen.

Watson was arrested last month after police witnessed him driving erratically. The officers who pulled over the former state representative said that he was not able to walk steadily and appeared to be very intoxicated. However, no field sobriety test or breathalyzer test were administered by police.

The officers were distracted by a pipe used to smoke marijuana that they spotted lying on the floor of his vehicle. Police searched the car and also found a bag of marijuana leaves on the passenger’s side. Watson was arrested and charged with marijuana possession.

Judge convicts woman of DUI after jury finds her not guilty

Posted on February 8th, 2012 No Comments

This week, a Pennsylvania judge convicted a 25-year old woman from Salisbury Township of drunk driving only minutes after the court’s jury announced that they had found her not guilty of second-offense drunk driving.  The judge declared that he was accepting evidence apparently rejected by the jury when they deliberated about the woman’s guilt, and convicted her of general-impairment DUI that the jury could not rule on.

The 25-year old was charged with drunk driving after a police officer saw her exit a car’s driver-side door while the vehicle was double-parked and flashing its hazard lights.  According to the woman and two passengers in the vehicle, she was only in the driver’s seat to grab some bags out of the front of the car while the group’s designated driver was unlocking the door to their home.  She stated that she had never driven the vehicle that night.  Police performed a blood-alcohol test that revealed the woman to have a BAC of .18 percent.

The judge was previously criticized for suspending the woman’s driver’s license before the trial, which was later delayed because prosecutors were not prepared.  Now, because of his decision to convict on a lesser DUI charge, the woman faces up to 6 months in jail and a year-long suspension of her driver’s license.

Man driving Zamboni arrested for drunk driving

This Monday, a man in Minnesota was arrested for drunk driving on a Zamboni.  The man was arrested after a children’s hockey game.

Parents and coaches at the game said the Zamboni driver appeared to be having difficulty operating the machine and bumped into the walls around the ice rink several times.

In addition, people at the rink said that cleaning the ice took the driver 25 minutes, when it usually only takes about 10 minutes.

Police officers spoke with the driver after he was done cleaning the rink and noticed the scent of alcohol on his breath and that he was having difficulty standing steady.  After conducting a field sobriety test, officers arrested the Zamboni driver.
