Yesterday morning, a 49-year-old woman plead guilty to driving under the influence causing serious injuries. The woman was charged with a DUI, after causing a pedestrian accident in March 2011. The driver struck a 14-year-old girl who was on a walk with her cousin in East Providence.

The teenager was unconscious after being hit by the woman’s vehicle, and was taken to the hospital in critical condition and put in a medically induced coma while she recovered. The 49-year-old’s blood alcohol level was over two times the legal limit, after the accident. She initially did not plead guilty, but changed her plea this week in Providence Superior Court.

Barrington police recently charged a 29-year-old woman who was driving on County Road in Barrington, but thought she was in Wakefield, Rhode Island with drunk driving. According to police, the West Bridgewater, Massachusetts woman was pulled over shortly after 4 a.m. on Sunday morning. The driver was traveling southbound near the city’s Town Hall.

The woman was recorded to be traveling at 50 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone and swerving. When the police officer talked to her, the driver said that she had just left a party in Wakefield. Reports indicate that the 29-year-old failed a field sobriety test and appeared to be intoxicated.  She did not submit a breathalyzer test to police.

Yesterday, several events were held in Providence to honor civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  This past Sunday would have been King’s 83rd birthday.

Martin Luther King Day became recognized as a day of service by Congress in 1994.  In honor of King’s service, Serve Rhode Island volunteer center held training on being active for civil rights without using violence.

The event was held at Providence College, and training was conducted by The Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence.  Participants were all AmeriCorps volunteers.

In addition, City Year Rhode Island continued their tradition of volunteering at one public school in the state on Martin Luther King Day to make repairs and improve the appearance of the school.  50 students were at Gilbert Stuart Middle School on their day off, painting walls in the cafeteria and class rooms.

AAA is offering a way to stay safe over New Year’s weekend and avoid drunk driving. This service, called Tipsy Tow, allows for individuals to call AAA and receive a free ride home as well as one free tow.

If you reside in the state of Rhode Island, this AAA service will unfortunately not be offered this year. In years past Tipsy Tow has been an option in the state but this year it will not be included on the list.

New Year’s Eve brings with it an increased amount of drinking and driving. It is imperative to designate a driver or reserve a cab before celebrating the new year.
