An accident was avoided Friday morning when an officer driving on a Warwick highway noticed a car weaving in and out of the breakdown lane at 65-70 miles per hour. A police vehicle with its lights on sat in the breakdown lake just down the road, and the weaving vehicle was headed toward it.

The officer turned on his emergency lights and pulled over the weaving driver, who took a Breathalyzer test. Both her readings were above the legal limit for blood alcohol concentration, and the 29-year-old was held overnight. She was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.

A 54-year-old Providence man was pulled over in Coventry earlier this month, charged with his eighth DUI offense. The man also has 33 arrests on record for various charges, dating back to 1989. In the most recent incident, a passing motorist alerted the police to a vehicle driving erratically. Police pulled the driver over and found him to be driving under the influence.

The man was arraigned Friday. This is his third DUI charge in a five-year period, which is punishable by three to five years in prison. Authorities say no plea was entered, because it is a felony charge.

During the celebration of the New Year’s holiday which recently took place, the number of accidents and arrests which were tied to drunken driving increased.

This significant increase in accidents and arrests is common each year. One of the hallmarks of the New Year’s celebration is drinking. Many times, individuals will get behind the wheel of a vehicle. Because law enforcement knows this occurs, they increase enforcement efforts during the celebrations. During these celebrations, some individuals are arrested that need to be off the roads, however many innocent drivers are unfairly targeted by law enforcement.

Law enforcement officials stated that a spike in accidents occurred during the night of the holiday.
