This Monday, a man in Minnesota was arrested for drunk driving on a Zamboni. The man was arrested after a children’s hockey game.

Parents and coaches at the game said the Zamboni driver appeared to be having difficulty operating the machine and bumped into the walls around the ice rink several times.

In addition, people at the rink said that cleaning the ice took the driver 25 minutes, when it usually only takes about 10 minutes.

Police officers spoke with the driver after he was done cleaning the rink and noticed the scent of alcohol on his breath and that he was having difficulty standing steady. After conducting a field sobriety test, officers arrested the Zamboni driver.

Contact the Rhode Island drunk driving defense attorney, James Powderly, at 401-662-9006, if you or someone you know has been charged with drunk driving.

When the 58-year old was pulled over, officers discovered 4 children were also in the vehicle. The kids ranged in age from 2-years old to 10-years old.

In addition to the DUI charge, the driver was ticketed for child restraint violations. The man’s previous DUI arrests were in Texas and Iowa. In Rhode Island, if a person is arrested for drunk driving 3 times in a 5-year period, the third offense will be a felony offense.

Yesterday, several events were held in Providence to honor civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This past Sunday would have been King’s 83rd birthday.

Martin Luther King Day became recognized as a day of service by Congress in 1994. In honor of King’s service, Serve Rhode Island volunteer center held training on being active for civil rights without using violence.

The event was held at Providence College, and training was conducted by The Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence. Participants were all AmeriCorps volunteers.

In addition, City Year Rhode Island continued their tradition of volunteering at one public school in the state on Martin Luther King Day to make repairs and improve the appearance of the school. 50 students were at Gilbert Stuart Middle School on their day off, painting walls in the cafeteria and class rooms.

This past Sunday, Barrington police arrested a woman and charged her with a first offense DUI after she drove through the backyard of a home.

Shortly after 2 in the morning, a 49-year old woman was witnessed driving her vehicle for about 100 feet through the backyard of a home on Nayatt Road. The driver did not know the people who lived at the home. The lot the woman drove though is at the end of a cul de sac that overlooks Mousochock Creek. The driver’s vehicle became stuck in mud at the edge of the creek.

The home’s owner called the police and when they arrived, the driver told them that she had gotten lost. Officers found 2 boys in the woman’s vehicle.

The woman reportedly failed a field sobriety test and refused a chemical test. Police charged her with both refusing a chemical test and driving under the influence. The boys were expected to be put in the hands of the RI Department of Children, Youth and Families.
