Driver Pleads Not Guilty in Attleboro DUI

Posted on July 30th, 2010 No Comments

A driver charged with drunken driving in Rhode Island pleaded not guilty Monday in Attleboro District Court.

According to officials with the Rhode Island State Police, 44 year-old Frederic M. Golembewski, of 86 High St. in North Attleboro, was ordered held in jail in lieu of $5,000 bail after pleading not guilty to a second-offense drunken driving charge and three related offenses. Investigators say Golembewski collided with the rear of a car driven by 51 year-old Laura J. Russ, Friday night.

Russ suffered a broken ankle, two broken ribs and a punctured lung in the crash, but is expected to be released from Rhode Island Hospital in Providence Tuesday, prosecutors say.

AT&T Introduces New Tool to Fight DUI in Rhode Island

Posted on July 2nd, 2010 No Comments

AT&T has introduced a new wireless device in Rhode Island that can alert police whenever a driver fails a sobriety check.

The telecommunications giant has developed a new tool that goes beyond other vehicle interlock devices. Older devices tests for alcohol on a persons breath by requiring the driver to blow into a hand-held unit attached to a vehicles dashboard. The vehicle will not start if the blood alcohol level is above a certain limit. Many of these devices can also require random samples after a vehicle is in motion.

Old devices can prevent engines from starting and can set off car alarms when a person fails the test. The new AT&T device does that, but also sends a GPS locater signal to nearby police departments, informing them of the failed test. The new tool will make it easier for law enforcement officials to find inebriated people before they drive.

BWI charges filed against RI man

Posted on June 16th, 2010 No Comments

Rhode Island’s Department of Environmental Management Police arrested the 27-year-old man responsible for the death of two women, and promptly delivered him to court.

The man was pressed with six criminal charges, five of which are felonies, surrounding a May 16 crash into Despair Island in the early morning that left two Massachusetts women dead. The Newport Superior Court set his court date for June 26. His charges include operation so as to endanger, reckless boating, refusing to submit to a chemical test, and two counts of operating a watercraft under the influence. With multiple counts resulting in death, the prison sentences that are associated with these counts are heightened to their maximum range.

The Rhode Island Attorney General used the case to highlight the differences between DWI and BWI charges, and the necessity for stricter maximum punishments for BWI charges.

AT&T offers new ignition lock

Posted on June 10th, 2010 No Comments

AT&T has added their name into the line-up of ignition locks available in Rhode Island for law enforcement officials to use.

While there are three other companies working in the state to provide breathalyzer ignition locks for the law enforcement community, AT&T’s contribution is a lock that includes a global positioning device that will pinpoint the vehicle for police to immediate locate and intercept. The hope, for authorities, is that these types of immediate response devices will prevent further complications that less technologically advanced models cannot. With these devices, police can arrive to assist the public, protecting them from potential confrontations with a possibly belligerent drunk driver.

Other models prevent engine start-up and trigger an alarm from the car. AT&T’s model does this as well as providing GPS information to local police.

A Rhode Island man has been found guilty of drunk driving following a single-vehicle accident that left one man dead and two injured.

The man, identified as a Rhode Islander who spent some time in the Merchant Marine and formerly worked as a fisherman, publicly apologized to the court following the sentencing. The man was sentenced with six years imprisonment and six years of probation afterward.

According to the prosecution, the man was driving a truck with other passengers while intoxicated last summer. While on Block Island, the man began to accelerate to 73 miles-per-hour in a 25 mile-per-hour speed limit zone, eventually losing control over the truck, and crashing the vehicle into a tree and a wall made of stone.

Two of the driver’s passengers were injured. One other passenger was killed after being thrown from the truck due to the impact of the collision.

Rollover accident leads to DUI charge against Rhode Island teen

Police have charged a 19 year-old woman with DUI after a single-vehicle rollover accident.

The woman rolled her car over in Barrington, Rhode Island, on the Wampanoag Trail by the Riverside line. The incident occurred some time around 1 a.m. Sunday morning. When emergency crews arrived, the fire department needed to use the jaws of life to remove her from her vehicle. Despite these measures, she was released from the hospital shortly after arriving there.

Police have officially charged her with DUI, but have not determined whether that means the cause of the accident could be attributed to drinking alcohol or taking prescription drugs. The woman is expected to appear before the Providence District Court on Wednesday.

Breathalyzer ignition lock has real-time capability

Posted on May 20th, 2010 No Comments

A New York entrepreneur has created a new ignition lock that boasts real-time communication with police and emergency services and the breathalyzer device.

The device is capable of providing real-time information to authorities, including the capability of sending failed results to police in order to stop particular drivers from harming other people, a camera to ensure that another person is not blowing into the breathalyzer, and can randomly test drivers during their travels.

Interceptor Ignition Interlocks, Inc., was started as an idea John Ruocco had to remedy the tragic consequences of drunk driving he felt in his own life. Beginning in 2000, Ruocco looked at other ignition locks, seeing what worked and what did not. In 2004, he used funding from a previous venture to start up his new ignition lock company and design the device.

The Interceptor is currently only certified in seven states, but, with stricter legislation being passed throughout the U.S. concerning drunk drivers, he is optimistic that his patented real-time design will win out over other systems.

Repeat Offender Gets Eighth DUI

Posted on February 24th, 2010 No Comments

A 54-year-old Providence man was pulled over in Coventry earlier this month, charged with his eighth DUI offense. The man also has 33 arrests on record for various charges, dating back to 1989. In the most recent incident, a passing motorist alerted the police to a vehicle driving erratically. Police pulled the driver over and found him to be driving under the influence.

The man was arraigned Friday. This is his third DUI charge in a five-year period, which is punishable by three to five years in prison. Authorities say no plea was entered, because it is a felony charge.
